Mathematical modelling of the human cervical spine
نویسنده
چکیده
Injuries to the cervical spine are quite commonly found in traffic accidents. The mechanisms of injury to the cervical spine are not fully understood, because the human cervical spine is an anatomically complex structure, subjected to a variety of loading conditions in an accident. A mathematical model of the cervical spine will be a valuable tool in the study and understanding of the mechanical behaviour of this complex biological structure. This report gives the results of a literature survey conducted as the first part of a project concerning the development of a mathematical model of the human cervical spine. The model must describe, in detail, the biomechanical response of the human head and neck t o various impact situations, and it must incorporate injury mechanisms. The survey concerned the aspects relevant for mathematical modell ing of the human cervical spine. Included is the literature relevant to the functional anatomy and biomechanics, injury mechanisms, and mathematical models of the cervical spine, as well as experimental results usable for model validation.

متن کاملHydatid Disease of the Cervical Spine Mimicking Traumatic Burst Fracture
Background & Importance: Hydatid disease of the spine is rare but constitutes approximately 50% of bone involvement cases in human hydatidosis. It is a severe condition associated with a high rate of morbidity, disability and mortality. Case Presentation: In the present paper, we report an intriguing case of cervical spinal hydatid disease mimicking traumatic burst fracture. Con...
متن کاملDysphagia Due to Anterior Cervical Spine Osteophyte: A Case Report
Introduction: Degenerative changes of the cervical spine are more common in elderly, but anterior cervical osteophytes that cause problems in swallowing are rare. The most common cause of this problem is DISH disease (diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis). Trauma is also suggested as a potential cause in osteophyte formation. Case Report: We report a rare case of anterior cervical osteop...
متن کاملPredicting the Risk of Hearing Impairment Following the Cervical Spine Diseases by Measuring the Cervical Range of Movements: A Pilot Study
Introduction: Cervical spine abnormalities can affect the ear vessels and or nerves with different mechanisms. Ear dysfunctions following cervical spine injuries can be manifested as hearing loss, vertigo, or tinnitus. Usually, cervical spine injuries can cause pain and Range of Motion (ROM) limitation. The major objective of this study was to determine which cervical ROM limitation was accompa...
متن کاملExperimental determination of cervical spine mechanical properties.
The results of research into human cervical spine mechanical parameters necessary for process modelling are presented. Our tests were divided into identification of tissues mechanical features and determination of data useful for validating human cervical spine models. Mechanical properties of the whole cervical spine as well as the stiffness of ligaments and discs were identified on the basis ...
